ETHOnline 2024 with DIMO: A Look at the 6 Winning Projects

September 19, 2024

ETHOnline 2024, one of the biggest ETH hackathons of the year with $200k in prizes, wrapped up recently, and we couldn’t be more excited about all of the projects building on the DIMO protocol.

As one of 23 sponsoring partners, DIMO was thrilled to receive over a dozen prize applications, showcasing incredible creativity and innovation in the mobility space. Over the three-week competition, over 1,500 hackers from 92 countries came together to solve big problems, leveraging DIMO and other partners in blockchain.

While all competing projects were worthy, we could only choose 5 winning projects (and one honorable mention) to take in a $1000 reward for their efforts in building with DIMO. Here’s a quick look at the standout projects and how they are using DIMO to build a better future for vehicles:

🚗 Most Breakthrough Mobility Solution: PredictaDrive

PredictaDrive is revolutionizing car insurance for rentals by leveraging DIMO’s vehicle data and decentralized prediction markets. Hosts, who are the car owners, can mint NFTs tied to their DIMO-connected vehicles, which serve as insurance policies to the car renters. These NFTs are used in prediction markets where participants bet on whether the car will be damaged during the rental.

Using DIMO’s real-time data, PredictaDrive ensures transparency by tracking details like mileage and fuel levels, adding accountability to rentals. This approach cuts out traditional insurers, offering a peer-to-peer solution with no middlemen, and creating a whole new way to insure cars. This is a groundbreaking solution for the future of car insurance and betting markets.

"The DIMO team is some of the best in the business when it comes to community dev support – they are constantly available to answer questions and help get devs onboarded.

Building on DIMO, there’s definitely this moment when you realize the absolutely massive amount of use cases that come from having near-unlimited access to real vehicle data. It was tough picking a single project idea since there’s just so much potential."

🛠️ Best Car Nerd Solution: DIMOverse

DIMOverse brings car enthusiasts into a data-driven gaming world by merging DIMO’s vehicle data with immersive gameplay. This project offers two unique games, blending real-world driving with virtual experiences.

In the Landmark Exploration Game, players unlock new parts of their city as they drive, revealing real-world landmarks through DIMO’s location data. It’s like turning your daily commute into an adventure map, where real-time vehicle movements uncover hidden points of interest.

In the Racing Game, your car’s real-world health directly affects gameplay. Low tire pressure? You’ll struggle with in-game handling. Engine issues? Don’t expect top speeds. By integrating DIMO’s telemetry data, DIMOverse makes the virtual car behave based on the status of your real vehicle, adding a layer of realism and strategy to the racing experience.

🚕 Best Gig Economy Solution: ZeroCabs

Decentralized Uber has long been discussed in the web3 community, and it’s finally here: ZeroCabs is a decentralized taxi service that puts power in the hands of drivers and passengers, cutting out traditional ride-sharing platforms. Using DIMO’s vehicle data, ZeroCabs tracks real-time location, sensor readings, and vehicle health metrics to optimize rides and ensure safety.

DIMO’s telemetry ensures that every ride is tracked, providing much-needed transparency. ZeroCabs also adds an interesting twist: emergency responders are rewarded with cryptocurrency based on service metrics. This blend of blockchain, vehicle data, and decentralized communication makes ZeroCabs a leading solution for the gig economy.

🌎 Most Humanitarian Solution: ZeroToHero

What’s all this for if we’re not making the world a slightly better place along the way? That’s where ZeroToHero came in, taking a unique approach to waste management by incentivizing users to report and collect waste, earning tokens for their contributions. Though it didn't heavily rely on DIMO’s vehicle data, it did integrate DIMO to calculate eco-scores based on driving data.

Combining AI-powered waste verification with decentralized reporting, ZeroToHero makes it easy for users to track waste collection while helping the environment. This project shows how simple actions like cleaning up can have far-reaching effects through the use of blockchain-based rewards.

🏆 Team Favorite: AUTO DAO

As a huge favorite of the DIMO team, AUTO DAO is transforming asset ownership by allowing users to tokenize planes, trains, and automobiles. By using DIMO’s car data, AUTO DAO ensures transparent and fair sharing of costs and profits among owners through tracking real-time usage and maintenance.

Imagine owning a fraction of a car, splitting expenses like maintenance and insurance, while earning a share of the profits based on your token holdings. That’s the type of future that AUTO DAO is enabling with their solution.

🎇 ETHOnline Finalists: OnlyCars

Last but not least, an honorable mention to OnlyCars - one of our judges’ favorite projects. OnlyCars is transforming the EV charging experience by creating a decentralized network of charging stations. Powered by DIMO, OnlyCars uses vehicle data to help EV owners find and track charging stations in real time. Whether you’re at home or on the road, you can locate nearby chargers, check availability, and even rent out your own station securely through the platform.

Each of these outstanding track winners has earned a $1,000 USD prize for their ingenuity and execution, while the finalist winner won a wide variety of prizes including swags and flight vouchers.

Finally, we want to give a huge shout-out to our hosts at ETHGlobal for such a successful event! If you’re a developer who wants to build with DIMO (or contribute to any of the projects above), check out the DIMO Developer Docs to learn how to get started.
